Personality:
Kai is all for law and order. It’s how he grew up after all. His mother ran the house like it was a multi stepped recipe and everything had a place and time. It’s something he’ll never get rid of as he finds a routine familiar and comforting. Kai has a routine he follows daily, and becomes irritated when his run or post meditation breakfast is interrupted. Unexpected things do happen but Kai doesn’t respond well to change. He likes to think long and hard before making decisions and doubts himself if he has to fly by the seat of his pants. Kai has a cool exterior and doesn’t show much of his emotions. It’s not his fault, since his stern face is stuck in one expression most of the time. Working at his parents cafe helped with this and he has a dazzling smile and knows how to use it.
Kai is friendly enough. He doesn’t go out of his way to meet new people, but is great at small talk. A good listener, he’s lent a sympathetic ear to many customers over the years and gives poignant advice. A bit on the opinionated side Kai isn’t afraid to call it as he sees it. Fortunately he can tell when it’s time to be blunt and time to use some tact. Kai is vocal in voicing his displeasure in anything. This is multiplied when he gets drunk. Alcohol loosens his tongue. His alcohol tolerance isn’t as high as it could be either. Kai is loyal to those he considered friends even in the face of betrayal. Perhaps not the smartest way of thinking, but Kai doesn’t let just anyone into his inner circle.
In a world full of pokemon, Kai’s knowledge of them is still somehow limited. His father owned a cafe and his mother worked as a baker there. Neither had traveled to far off regions and Kai books, television and pokemon found in the city around him are his only guides. He prefers to stay in the city and the fact it enables him to keep a set schedule. Such a thing wouldn’t be possible outside roaming the routes. Yet Kai wants to become a hunter and learn all he can about what lies outside the law and order of the city. Out in the wild is where the lawbreakers hide and he can’t just leave them out there. Kai is loathe to admit but he’s excited by the challenge.
History:
Kai’s early years aren’t too particularly exciting. He was born in a hospital four days late and with no complications. His father had recently purchased a storefront and was in the process of remodeling it into a cafe. Janie, his mother, was their ace in the hole. Her baking skills were legendary and her pastries would have people coming to the cafe in droves. Kai grew up in the cafe under the watchful eyes of his father’s Growlith. Regular customers became like family and Kai would often sneak out of the back to say hi and sneak a snack.
Kai was four when his sister Korrie was added to the family. He was not pleased with the wriggling screaming baby and it took some convincing for him to even hold her. Of course as they both grew up, Kai started to take his big brother duties seriously and made sure Korrie didn’t get into things she wasn’t supposed to and protected her from playground bullies. Kai was twelve when he started to work at his parents shop. After he caught the stovetop on fire twice while trying to use the oven he was reassigned to dishwashing. It wasn’t something interesting but it kept him occupied and he had spending money. At least when he didn’t drop any plates or glasses.
Kai made a better waiter, and as he hit puberty and filled out, there was a notable increase in the female clientele. He didn’t mind their flirting as long as it didn’t get in his way. Matter of fact he was a bit proud to be that attractive. Kai let his hair grow out and started running to keep in shape. There were a few angry boyfriends along the way, but Kai wasn’t a stranger to defending himself. He’d found a dojo and started taking lessons in self defense. A bit awkward at first, Kai quickly learned how to flirt with whomever he could to increase his tips. Taking his sisters advice, Kai ended up dating one of their prettier regulars. It was serious enough that he had plans to move in with her. They went on weekly dates and he let her kiss and hug him whenever she came to the cafe. It cut down on his tips, but Kai felt it was worth it. At least until she broke it off with him. Half of his things were at her place when she called him at work just to break up and hang up.
In the end she made him out to the bad guy, just because he insisted on getting all of his packed possessions back from her. Unfortunately he was all out of dignity and didn’t have anyplace to go once it was all said and done. Korrie was still at home and Kai really didn’t want to move back in with his parents so the apartment hunting became less hunting and more he’d take what he could get. The rent was higher than he would have prefered but Kai was able to find a house with an empty bedroom for rent. He had to share with three other men but he could move in ASAP which was the important part. In time Kai came to regret the snap decision. His roommates were morons. None of them could cook, and Kai got stuck with the cooking once they found out he worked at a cafe. Nothing caught on fire, but his roommates quickly learned that he wasn’t much better than they were at fending for themselves.
Over the next year Kai did learn to get along with all the other guys in the house. Matter of fact they were the one’s to get him thinking about becoming a hunter. Several of the guys had breeders, trainers and coordinators in the family and were eager to educate Kai on the ins and outs of pokemon. Kai liked the city and was loathe to disrupt the comfortable routine he had, be he did have to admit he was a little bored. After a night of heavy drinking on his twenty first birthday, Kai was dared to sign up to get a starter and begin training as a hunter. Living with the guys that he did there was no backing out of it. So yet again, without his consent, his life took a new turn. Kai would never admit to it, but he was excited. He just has to go get his first pokemon and survive training it.
