SASHA ZHARKOV HEY THERE, THEY CALL ME Sasha AND I'M CURRENTLY 31 YEARS OLD. Didn't we let go, allowed it, let it grow? If we can't restrain the beast which dwells inside, it will find it's way somehow, somewhere in time. Will we remember all of the suffering? C'ause if we fail it will be in vain. Sanctus Espiritus, redeem us from our solemn hour. Sanctus Espiritus, insanity is all around us. Sanctus Espiritus, is this what we deserve? Can we break free from chains of never-ending agony? Sasha is calm and matter of fact. Things are how they are and he doesn’t have time for sugar coating bad news. everything in his life is done systematically. There is an order and place for everything. After all it’s his job to take chaos and make sense out of it. Within a few minutes of meeting a new person they are sorted and filed into neat categories based on many different things. Their friendliness, their threat to him, their usefulness for future cases, competence in the workplace and abilities to keep information confidential are all examples. It’s this ability to see things and categorize them that made him a decent ranger as well. Sasha is a bit judgemental of others and not so quick to forgive their mistakes. He’ll put up with them and continue working with the person but don’t mistake it for forgiveness. Moss is really the only person he forgives on a regular basis and it’s because the man is his boss and hopeless. The shifter doesn’t have a problem changing his view of a person if they prove themselves to be different. Nothing is ever set in stone with Sasha. Life is all about change after all. Each day is different and he’s adaptable enough to go along with it. However he doesn’t really like change. It’s rarely a good thing for him and he likes his rutine. Sudden changes irritate him and make his blood pressure climb. Contingencies are built in here or there for extra long meetings and such but impromptu calls to court are met with icy glares and stiff angry movements. Sasha was raised on proper manners and gentlemanly behavior. So he rarely loses his cool polite exterior but don’t think for a minute he finds you shenanigans funny. He has no problem being a kill joy and ordering those under him back to work. He tries to do the same to moss though he expects his orders to be followed with varying degrees of success. Sasha does share a few of the same views as his late father. While not always on purpose he behaves a bit misogynistic and does think that women have their own place in the household. They’re not weaker than men in his mind but there are certain jobs he sees as women only or not for women at all. Considering his only female role model was his mother this shouldn’t be a surprise. Sasha has kept his quiet somewhat submissive shell from his childhood. He’s not prone to outbursts of any sort and doesn’t appear riled easily to most. The shifter still hides behind the safe walls of his cool exterior. It’s hard for him to be open about his past or reveal his scare to anyone. His emotional scars are covered just like his physical ones, never to see the light of day. Some long nights he spends time in the mirror staring at his marred reflection, running over his many mistakes and shortcomings. Such internal turmoil is followed by several glasses of wine and a fitful night of sleep. On occasion he pulls out the strong stuff and drinks into a stupor. Hangovers aren’t fun so he tries not to get that far gone. The truth is, while Sasha doesn’t doubt his skills as a lawyer or ranger he doubts himself as a human. And well he’s not even human. If his father found something bad enough to warrant beatings then there’s something wrong with who he is. His pokemon have helped him see that the fault lies with the old man and nothing that sasha himself did. Deep in his heart however, he still believes there’s something inherently wrong with him to keep others from loving him completely. Sasha is very good at covering up these insecurities and they’re almost impossible to see, but any derogatory comments toward his personality cause him to second guess his actions. Though if his work skills are insulted, the person just might find a foot up their hind end. His friends and job are fiercely defended and Sasha can get out right possessive of anyone close to him. History: just a few days after the winter solstice judge zharkov anxiously paced in the waiting room of a hospital. his beloved julia was in labor with their first son. it was creeping up on midnight and she had been admitted late that morning. the more he paced, it seemed the less happened. the judge had been asked to leave the room an hour before and his whole body was stiff with worry. perhaps it hadn't been such a good idea to let the geneticists toy with their sons dna. yet this wasn't their first attempt at having a child. all were miscarried or were stillborn. he had turned to scientists to help. they not only guaranteed that pokemon dna would create a stronger child but they could give him a son to in turn become his heir. a son was indeed born that night, yet he didn't appear as strong as promised. having pale skin like his mother, the baby had to be kept in an incubator for the first three days of his life. once the first month went by however, sasha quickly grew in strength. he was named for his famous great grandfather that was rumored to have wrestled a bearartic with his bare hands and won. a strong name for a strong heir. even from a young age sasha had responsibility shoved onto him. judge zharkov moved in the inner circles. he was held in high regarded as one of fairest judges around. sasha was expected to follow in his old man's foot steps and he was trained twice a week after school by a law tutor to give him a he'd start. a smart child he picked up concepts quickly and memorized cases with a little hard work. he didn't understand how they fit together as a whole but he figured that would come with age. sasha idolized his father, often saving newspaper clippings when cases were mentioned in the papers. at least until the pale gijinka turned ten. cold light above us, hope fills the heart and fades away. skin white as winter, as the sky returns to gray. sasha was ten when his first gijinka powers manifested. he was a bit of a late bloomer, but he didn't really care if he could make a cute noise and other pokemon didn't want to attack him. he had his studies and that was all that mattered. until his father came home drunk one evening. sasha glanced up from the law book he'd been reading by the fire to a slap to the face. startled and a little afraid he cowered into the corner of the couch. this only seemed to anger the man more. the gijinka learned that night that the man he idolized only existed in the courtroom. his mother had been treated in the same manner for the last year and he hadn't even known. the only difference now was that sasha was forced to watch as his father shoved his mother's face into the meal she'd spent the afternoon cooking. there is nothing left of you, i can see it in your eyes. sing the anthem of the angels, and say the last goodbye. the once eager to learn and happy sasha withdrew into a quiet somber shell. he stopped talking to his friends one by one until he was left alone. lacking in an outgoing exterior, he was left alone in his studies and he threw himself body and soul into them. at age sixteen sasha's first physical fire attack surfaced and it wasn't a good thing. his father was drunk again and this time he had his mother on the floor and was kicking her. sasha tried to interfere but had been shoved into the corner and told to stay out of it. anger flooded his veins and fire erupted on his left hand. it was a failed fire spin attack, but he still lept at his father, determined to get him off his mother. in the end he faltered inches from the old man. his hand was grabbed roughly and turned around. pain erupted across the right side of his face as he was burned by his own flames. they died instantly but the damage had been done. barely able to see past the tears, sasha ran from the house and down the streets and into the surrounding forest. the gijinka ran until he couldn't run any more. his legs gave out and he went sprawling into the dirt. curled up into a sobbing ball, sasha felt as if he'd hit rock bottom. blinding pain made it hard to think and he was ready to just give up on everything. a zorua drawn in by the noise, came across the boy and he wasn't pleased in the least. he told him on no uncertain terms to leave his territory. blue fur tuft swaying in agitation he scratched him. injured or not sasha shouldn't be there. however no matter what he did to attack or move him, sasha didn't budge as the boy had already passed out. giving up as the moon rose higher the zorua settled next to him intent on making sure he didn't muck anything up. that's how sasha woke up in the morning, a sleeping zorua curled up against his back and an smarting face. the boy stumbled his way home and was treated for his injuries though no one asked any questions and no one in the household mentioned it again. still, sasha was intrigued by the pokemon he'd met in the forest. he traveled back to it as often as he could but sightings of the elusive pokemon were rare. at least until he happened upon an ugly looking caterpie about to become a pidgey's lunch. without thinking sasha leapt in front of the bug pokemon. a clumsy poison jab and low kick later and the bird was driven away. he turned to the caterpie to make sure it was alright when the form wavered and there was the zorua. it growled at him for chasing away it's dinner. with a feint attack straight to the gut it was gone. sasha didn't understand why the pokemon would'n't let him get close but he wasn't about to give up. he'd slacked off on his law studies and the judge was angrier than usual. the man was the reason sasha had slid into a depression and wasn't willing to learn anything in the first place. the zorua hunt was the only thing the gijinka was willing to do. once his burn was healed sasha found himself dragged to mirun's lab. his father paid for a service and his son became an shifter. sasha soon found out why. he shared the dna of not just any flaming unicorn but a shiny one. his flowing grey mane matched his hair but he was an object to now be paraded around in front of his fathers friends. little did the rest of the family know but the judge had been loosing favor as of late. rumors of shady dealings and the like. he was hoping to use his son to his own advantage. of course the nasty scar of a handprint on his face was carefully covered up with makeup though a discolored patch of fur remained in his rapidash form. Other than being dragged along to business meetings and tutoring unicorn obsessed daughters, Sasha wasn’t subjected to much. every saturday and sunday night he still snuck out to the woods. Instead of hunting for the zorua he shifted forms and ran free. The feel of the grass against his legs and the moon on his back were as soothing as his life got. one night while running he tripped over what he assumed was a rock. instead it was a ticked off dark type. Instead of fleeing or continuing on his run sasha stood his ground and snorted a challenge. His tutor had stormed out of the house earlier afternoon, refusing to teach sasha further until the boy got his head on straight. naturally his father was angry, though it surprised him that his mother was as well. not matter what the judge did to her she followed along like a loyal puppy. It made sasha angry and sick and the shifter was ready to work of the frustration. despite the zorua having more experience fighting, sasha was able to overcome the pokemon. the dog shut its eyes in the face of the boys flaming hooves coming down on it’s worn out body. Only sasha couldn’t deliver the blow. just one more and the wild pokemon would be feinted and he could’ve done what he pleased with it. except he couldn’t. instead he shifted back into his human form and scooped the shiny zorua into his arms. hot tears dropped onto the pokemons fur as sasha cried out his frustrations. that night he learned that he wasn’t his father. He couldn’t recklessly injure others, and he refused to ever be like the old man. the zorua wasn’t happy about being beaten and then cried all over. in the end he followed sasha to the edge of the forest, bit him and then scurried back into the woods. whenever the boy would go into the woods the zorua waited for him and traveled along with him and made sure none of the other pokemon disturbed him. food or treats were refused until sasha started eating meals in the forest with the zorua. they explored and trained together. The tiny pokemon helped sasha improve his aim and defenses. in his pokemon from the boy was uncoordinated, and despite practice he still wasn’t perfect. the zorua accepted the name zoro and in time the pair became friends. just a few days shy of his eighteenth birthday sasha’s father was killed. it was a heart attack or so the morgue said. the pale teen didn’t really care, the horrible man was out of his life for good. A weight was gone from his shoulders and for the first time in a long time he had hope. yet one burden was replaced with another. Sasha was to start his law schooling and would be moving to another city to live on campus. he was worried about his grieving mother and would have thrown away his scholarship and degree if she hadn’t insisted he go. her words of “make your father proud” turned his stomach, but he would do anything she asked of him. the night before he left for school sasha entered the forest to say goodbye to zoro. the small pokemon was waiting on the edge of the forest for him as usual, but was surprised when, sasha knelt and patted his head. not one for drawn out emotional scenes anymore, he bid the pokemon farwell and thanked his for the years of friendship. then he quickly turned and left not wanting to see the look on zoro’s face. the zorua had never tried to follow him home, so he was more than a little surprised to hear footsteps on the sidewalk behind him. if sasha was going to a strange, new place then zoro would continue to be his bodyguard and companion. sasha wasn’t going to be left alone again. Law school was competitive and difficult on good days and cut throat and suicidal at the worst. Sasha hadn’t lost his talent for law, however and many of the professors took a liking to him. maybe that’s why he was able to juggle both becoming a ranger and his exams. as a young man sasha felt as if becoming a lawyer was a dream his parents had forced on him and he was ready to buck off their ideals and pursue his own dream. the rangers were about as far from the law as he strayed, only instead of writing it, he was enforcing it. Moss was… interesting to say the least, but zoro and sasha passed the exam to stay together so he couldn’t really complain. not one to dawdle, sasha hit the ground with feet running and quickly achieved the topaz badge. missions were tackled as they came and he strove to advance in the ranks. law school took a backseat to his ranger duties and for a time a law degree was all but forgotten. The more time sasha spent around Moss the more the man grew on him, though he was convinced the man was beyond help. every time he came back from a mission whether successful or not, Moss had some sort of new injury. The lawyer in the shifters head, tallied the damages and what the insurance premiums would be. It made his head hurt to think about. sasha was working on reaching his sapphire badge when he met elise. a female charmeleon that latched herself to him and glared daggers at zoro. he was on a mission to find charmanders but ended up on the wrong route. she declared her his and was happy to accompany him. Though sasha was pretty sure she just liked him for his shiny fire type pokemon form. a charmander was found and caught so that was all that mattered. in time she became his second guardian, though her and zoro tended to butt heads over who’s turn it was to escort him around. the shifter completed two missions past the sapphire badge before he stepped back from being a ranger. Sasha had done some soul searching and thinking and he wasn’t ready to leave the law behind and it was very apparent that Moss was in need of a proper lawyer to handle all the paperwork he created. he was still a member of the rangers but stopped going on missions and just kept up to date on training and helping out with any questions the current aging ranger lawyer had. the man intended to stay on with the rangers to allow the other lawyer to retire. he had knowledge of the inner workings of the organization already. well that and he didn’t trust that anyone else could handle the job. after sasha’s graduation he started working on reading all the rangers policies, both medical and insurance. The amount of money they spent per month was staggering and it was mainly due to one certain man. however sasha could never stay mad at moss for long. irritated, but never mad, especially when he received a chimecho as a graduation present. a sweet heart, she attached herself to his ponytail and calmed him with her soothing chimes. there were few days when sasha wasn’t irritated for one reason or the other and all had to do with the head ranger. between constantly getting injured and causing heavy property damage, the lawyer had his hands full making sure their premiums stayed low as possible and property owners didn;t go around spouting off bed rumors about the rangers. Elise, now a charizard, was rather good as burning incriminating evidence and zoro’s illusions helped gather intelligence. Sasha dipped into the shady end of the law, though he was careful to never actually break any. And get caught. as he took on taking care of and representing cases where the rangers were sued for one reason or the other, such dealings became very important. office workers became helpful with filing and handling insurance claims but sasha couldn’t relinquish control completely on anything, and ran himself ragged most days. Ame, would create happy melodies to help him relax and sleep while the other two drove off anyone that dared to disturb him. Sasha found himself accompanying moss on missions when asked and saw the man’s obliviousness and destructive powers in person. It was sort of awe inspiring and headache inducing at the same time. it was after one of these missions and a few glasses of wine that sasha sat down to ponder just why he kept following the man around. certainly there were far less stressful jobs and while he was paid well he could make even more money elsewhere. Then there was the fact he was a lawyer that went on ranger missions… there must be a less logical reason as to why he stuck around. in the end he realized though didn’t exactly come to terms with the fact he might have the tiniest of crushes on his boss. the shifter wasn’t the least bit happy about it either. in time he did accept his fondness for the man though promised himself to never speak of it. Moss was straight and far too oblivious to understand is sasha were to ever confess. instead he went along doing his work as usual, spending his time cursing out moss in his head and swallowing bottles of pain relievers. At least moonlit runs in his rapidash form were still refreshing as ever, and he let the horse run wild and free. Days go on forever, but I have not left your side. We can chase the dark together, if you go then so will I. All was not well. not long after graduation, his mother was placed in a nursing home. she refused to believe his father was dead. She would go on and on saying he’d just run out to get her something and would be home soon or that his case load was keeping him from being by her side. having seen her slowly deteriorate over the years, sasha did his best to visit her several times a week. some days she was nice and pleasant, others she was violent, and went into rages, shouting at sasha and the staff until she had to be sedated. he quickly learned never to remind her that his father was dead. At least his busy schedule allowed him to forget for a time that she was slowly dieing, a disease was eating away at her brain taking her memories and sanity. If she were to slip away in the night he wasn’t sure what he would do. For the time being she was comfortable and healthy enough and sasha had his job and pokemon to keep him going. Though it had been awhile since the last major upset in sasha’s life. He grew uncomfortable not knowing what was around the corner.
